The world-renowned 18th World Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Championship is scheduled to be held in Houston on November 19-25, 2023, at the prestigious hotel of Royal Sonesta Houston Galleria. This is the first time this prestigious tournament will be held in the United States. Being chosen by the World Xiangqi Federation to organize and run the 2023 competition is an honor not only for Houston but the whole country. This event will be co-hosted by Houston Sports Authority.
If you aren’t familiar with xiangqi, it’s chess’ Chinese cousin — globally played by even more people and arguably the most popular board game in the world. It is widely played throughout Asia, and it is growing in popularity in Europe and America. As many as a half-billion people know the moves and rules. Xiangqi has also been successfully incorporated in extracurricular activities at schools in China to develop mathematical and critical thinking.
The World Xiangqi Championship is expected to include delegations from around 30 countries and regions. More than 120 world-class players will compete in men's, women’s and junior competitions. Donors and supporters will not only enjoy international recognition, but also have the opportunity to mingle with those grand masters that are only seen on TV or internet.
The Houston Xiangqi Association, an IRS 501C(3) nonprofit organization established in 1998, is a founding member of the American Xiangqi Federation. It was established in July 1998 to advance the development of xiangqi in Houston and throughout the United States. The goals of hosting World Xiangqi Championship are not only to showcase the art of xiangqi at the highest level, but also to kindle the interest of developing strategic thinking among the young generations in America.
